Dubuque Daily Herald January 29, 1888
Mrs. James Hughes, who has been a resident of this state for thirty-six years, died yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock at his home in Rockdale. He was a native of Tuam, county Galway, Ireland, and came to Iowa in 1852 and located at Colesburg. He came to Dubuque county in 1886. His son died the day before Christmas and this grieved the old man's heart to such an extent that it hastened his demise. He was 80 years of age, and this blow was too severe for him to withstand. He was a kind old man, a Christian gentleman, and "one of nature's noblemen." During his life in the neighborhood everyone learned to love and respect him. His aged wife, now near her alloted three score and ten, survives him. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock from Rockdale. The interment will be at Key West.
