Dubuque Daily Times, Sunday, Feb 23, 1862, Dubuque, IA, Page: 4

STILLMAN H. SMITH- We are under the painful necessity this morning of announcing the death of this estimable young man. He was favorably known on this city. He was for some time in the employ of Hersey, Staples & Co. as clerk. He was Sergeant Major of the 14th regiment at the time of his death, and fell in the attack on Fort Donelson.
On the 11th inst. He wrote a letter to Deputy J. V. Rider, in which there is an evident presentiment of his death. He gives certain instructions in relation to the disposal of his land in Minnesota. His father, Josiah Smith, resides at West Cornwall. Addison County, Vermont.
Stillman H. Smith will meet his friends here no more. He has fallen nobly in a glorious cause, and has gone to receive a patriot’s reward.
