A Brakeman Killed.
Waukon Standard:—Down at the Junction last Friday as a freight train going north from Dubuque was being switched onto the side track to let the south bound passenger go by, a brakeman, Thomas McMahon of Dubuque, opened the switch to cut off and transfer a car of horses belonging to the Standard Lumber Co., and seeing the car as it came towards him had jumped the track and would fall over he started to climb the bank to get out of the way, but in going up his foot struck a rock pausing him to slip down again and before they could save himself the car fell over on him and crushed him to death. His body was taken out in a few minutes by the trainmen. It is said spreading of the rails was the cause of the fatality. He was 22 years of age. His body was taken home to to{sic} Dubuque for burial. Eight or more horses were killed.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born in 1872 and died Dec. 29, 1894. He is buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
