Bishop Hennessy Died last Sunday
The most Reverend John Hennessy, D. D., archbishop of Dubuque, died at 2:40 o’clock Sunday afternoon in the archiepiscopal residence, of cerebral hemorrhage. The funeral is taking place this forenoon. He succumbed to the third attack of what is commonly called appoplexy. The chief events in his life were as follows
Born in county Limerick, Ireland, August 30, 1825.
Entered the Catholic Seminary and began his studies for the priesthood at Carondelet, Mo., in 1838.
Ordained a priest by Bishop Kenrick Nov 1, 1850.
Was a priest at New Madrid, Mo., and Gravois, Mo., until 1854, when he became professor of dogmatic theology and ecclesiastical history in the Carondolet Seminary. In 1857 he became its president. The following year he visited Rome and Pope Plus IX as proxy for Bishop Kenrick.
Elected Bishop of Dubuque April 24, 1866, and consecrated Sept. 30th of the same year.
In 1891 the 25th anniversary of his Bishopric was celebrated with great pomp; and in September, 1893, he was elevated to be Archbishop of the diocese of Dubuque and given a territory reaching from the Mississippi to Cheyenne, Wyoming, in which there are 650 churches with 250,000 members.

NOTED PRELATE DEAD.
Archbishop Hennessy of the Catholic Diocese of Dubuque, Ia., Passes Away.
Dubuque, Ia., March 6.—Archbishop Hennessy died at 2:23 p. m Sunday. In March of last year the archbishop was first stricken with partial paralysis of the brain. Though for days at the point of death, he recovered, and was well until the evening of February 15, when he was again stricken. Friday night he was seized with another stroke, and though the attendants expected death every moment, he rallied slightly, and when Archbishop Ryan, of Philadelphia, arrived Sunday morning he showed signs of recognition, though unable to speak. He then began to sink and passed away quietly and without a sign of pain. The funeral will be held Thursday morning at ten o’clock. Archbishop Ryan, of Philadelphia, who preached the sermon when the dead prelate was made bishop, at his silver jubilee, and again when he was made archbishop, will pronounce the eulogy. The body will lie in state at the cathedral Wednesday. All the leading church dignitaries will be there.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he is buried in Saint Raphaels Cathedral Crypt in Dubuque.
