Farley, Ia. Oct.25-Mr. Nicholas Simon, one of Dubuque Counties prominent farmers passed away at the family home, here last Thursday morning, Oct. 25, 1927, after a brief illness. Everything possible was done to prolong his life, but all was to no avail, and he passed away at the time stated above.Mr. Simon was born in Belgium, January 7, 1846, where his youthful days were spent and he received his education. In the year 1876, he came to this country, and settled in Dubuque County, on January 6, 1880 He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Reiter, of Holy Cross the marriage taking place at Holy Cross Church, after which they settled at Bankston. He worked at the blacksmith trade for nine years, after which he moved onto a farm near Bankston, and he resided there continuously there for 25 years. Thirteen years ago he retired from farming and came to Farley to live. Thirteen children were born to them; one daughter Christina preceded him to the grave 18 years ago. Those with his wife surviving are: Nicholas, Joseph, John, Michael Matthew, and Mrs. Peter Berg, all of Farley; Leo of Bankston; Peter of Kadota, S. D.; Mrs. J. P. Hellman, Miller S. D. ;Mrs. Raymond Oberfoell, Kidder; and Louis and William of Dubuque.
The funeral took place Saturday morning, from his late home to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, where a requiem mass was sung for the repose of his soul by Rev. Father Coffey., after which his remains were laid to rest in the family lot, St. Clément’s Cemetery at Bankston. Rev. Father Banfield officiated at the graveside at Bankston.
The casket bearers were six of his sons; Messrs. Joe, Mike, John, Peter, Matt and Leo. The funeral cortege was very large, attesting the esteem in which the deceased was held.
Mr. Simon was one of the highly esteemed residents of this vicinity and was widely known. Honest and upright in all his dealings with his fellowmen, he merited the confidence of all who had the pleasure of knowing him. To his family he was always devoted, looking after their welfare, and he was a kind and charitable neighbor. A staunch Catholic, he passed way well-fortified with the rites of the church. Heartfelt sympathy is extended the bereaved wife and children in the loss of their husband and father.
