Dr. Lawrence R. Locher was born on Sept.2, 1888 at Monticello, Ia., son of Anthony and Caroline (Meyer) Locher. He received his education in the Monticello, Iowa Schools and later attended Northwestern College of Dentistry where he received his degree in dentistry in 1915. Dr. Locher practiced dentistry in Farley and surrounding area for 63 years prior to his retirement in 1973. He was a member of the Iowa Dental Association, and also a member of the N. Club of Northwestern University. Dr. Locher was also an ardent baseball player in the Farley area for many years; and had played on many of the surrounding teams.

He was married to Gertrude Tuel, his first wife, who died in Feb. 1919. He was then married to Marie O’Meara of Farley, Ia. on Nov. 27, 1928 at St. Joseph’s Church here in Farley. The couple had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Monday, Nov. 27th, while he was in the hospital.

Surviving is his wife, the former Marie O’ Meara, a resident of Bethany Home in Dubuque, Ia. and three sons, Thomas Locher, of Farley; James Locher, of Dubuque; and John Locher, of Farley; and three daughter, Mrs. Tim (Lois) Buckley, of Saugus, California; Mrs. Catherine Curphy, of Cedar Rapids; and Jane Locher McDonald of Dubuque, Ia. Seventeen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren and two sisters, Miss Mary Locher and Miss Bertha Locher, of Monticello, Iowa, and one brother, Leo Locher of Columbus, Nebr. and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife and nine brothers and four sisters.

Dr. Lawrence R. Locher, DDS, 90, of Farley, Iowa died Tuesday, Nov. 28th, 1978 at St. Joseph’s Unit of Mercy Health Center in Dubuque, Ia. following a short illness. Relatives and friends may call after 3 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the Reiff Funeral Home in Farley, from where the funeral services were held Thursday morning, to St. Joseph’s Church in Farley, where a celebrated mass was offered with the Rev. Charles W. Whalen, pastor of St. Joseph’s Church as celebrant, co-celebrants were Rev. J. J. Breitbach, Rev. Paul Weiss, and the Rev. Joseph McDermott, SVD. The sermon was delivered the Rev Charles W, Whalen. Mass servers were Kevin and Marty Kramer and Brian Beresford. Burial was made in the family lot in St. Joseph’s Cemetery at Farley, with the Rev. Paul Weiss and the Rev. Charles W. Whalen officiating. Casket bearers for Dr. Lawrence R. Locher were David Locher, Don Moonen, Don Fox, J. P. Elliott, Bob Scherrman and Eldon Greenwood.
