Cascade Pioneer, Cascade, Iowa, Friday, Morning, March 22nd, 1895

DEATH OF JOHN SEERY, SR.

John Seery, Sr., one of the old and respected citizens of Washington Township, Jones County, died last Monday at the old homestead in that township.

Mr. Seery was born in County West Meath, Ireland, January 6th, 1814, and was therefore over 81 years of age. He was liberally educated and early developed a talent for surveying and civil engineering, which profession he followed for a number of years, during which time he was a member of the Surveying and Engineering Corp of the English government. In 1840 he came to the United States and located in New Orleans, where he was employed for nine years as a bookkeeper in the large wholesale house of Hewett & Norton. It was in 1849, during his residence in the southern city, that he married Miss Mary Jane Farrelly. In 1850 he came to Iowa and settled in Washington Township, on the farm where he lived and passed the remainder of his days, comfortable in the possession of a large competency which by industry and frugality he had accumulated.

He served several terms as surveyor of Jones County, having been elected repeatedly on the democratic ticket, and filled the office in an acceptable and intelligent manner.
Mr. Seery was a kind and genial gentleman, and when in the full possession of his faculties before advanced age impaired his mental fabric, it was a rare treat to enjoy his company.

e leaves six children to mourn his loss, to-wit: Mrs. Robert Quirk and John Seery, of Cascade; Greg, of Los Angeles, Cal.; Miss Anna L., of Cascade; Mrs. Edward Brown, of Bernard; and Frank, on the homestead in Washington Township.
The funeral took place on Wednesday from St. Martin’s Church, and an impressive sermon was delivered by the Rev. Father Halpin. High Mass was celebrated in which Rev. Father’s Halpin, Roche, Comerford, Kelly, Feuerstein, and Convery officiated. The services were very largely attended. Interment was in the Catholic cemetery in this city.
