Death of Mrs. Mary Dehner

At an early hour Monday morning, Dec. 31, 1894, occurred the death of Mrs. Mary Dehner at the family residence in this city. On Thursday of last week she was suddenly stricken with paralysis, from the effect of which she never rallied, yet when the announcement of her death was made known it was a shock to the community and received with profound sorrow and regret, for she was a woman most highly respected for her inestimable virtues and noble Christian character.

Her maiden name was Mary Eva Kirner and she was born in Kappel, Baden, and May 24th, 1824. In 1832, at the age of three, she came to America with her parents, who located in Ohio, where in 1846 she was married to Henry Dehner, who died in July, 1883. With her husband she resided in Indiana until the fall of 1855 when they came to Iowa and located on the present homestead, where she resided continuously until the hour when death’s cold hand stilled her upright and useful life. She was a devout Catholic and died fortified by the holy sacraments of the church, as a mother she was revered by her children over and around whom her noble and Christian influences were thrown; and she was beloved by her neighbor and honored by all who knew her.

Three of her children are living to mourn her death; Mrs. Sophia Glynn; H. L. Dehner, cashier of the Cascade Bank; and Miss Mary of Cascade. Three sons, John, aged thirteen, Joseph, aged 9, and Stephen aged 4, died in 1861. Her brother Stephen Kirner, of Berlin, Ohio, and sisters Mrs. George Linder, of Ferdinand, Indiana, and Mrs. Sophia Meyer, of St. Louis, also survive her.

The funeral took place Wednesday at 10 o’clock a. m. from St. Mary’s Church, and was laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery, followed by an immense concourse of people. The Rev. F. X. Feuerstein officiated.
