DYERSVILLE, Iowa — Marvin A. Pettinger, 82, of Dyersville, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, August 1, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center-Dyersville.
Friends and relatives of Marvin may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, August 7, 2017, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Dyersville, Iowa. Friends may also call after 9 a.m. on Tuesday at the Reiff Funeral Home. Services for Marvin will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 8, 2017, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville, Iowa, with Rev. Dennis Conway Presiding. Burial will be held in St. Francis Cemetery in Dyersville, Iowa.
Marvin was born on June 22, 1935, in Dyersville, Iowa, son of Lawrence and Estella (Luehrsmann) Pettinger. He was a 1953 graduate of St. Francis Xavier High School and was an avid basketball player. After school he spent three years working in Alaska. He was united in marriage to Carol Ann Link on May 9, 1956, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville, IA. They were blessed with five children.
Marvin's career included owning and managing Schwarz's Tavern, Coast-To-Coast store and the never forgotten Cardinal Drive Inn. He also drove a school bus for Western Dubuque.
Marvin liked to cook, fish and hunt. He also loved to sing and play cards with family and friends.
He was a member of St. Francis Parish in Dyersville, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Pettinger, of Dyersville, IA; five children, Doug (Lisa) Pettinger, of Buhl, ID, Lori (Frank) Schoreit, of Omaha, NE, Russ (Joan) Pettinger, of Dyersville, IA, Ann (David) Nelson, of Fort Mills, SC, and Sue (Dale) Platz, of Papillion, NE; 11 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild, 3 step grandchildren; 4 step great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Ann Savolt, of Dyersville, IA; two sisters-in-law, Jane Pettinger, of Kansas City, KS, and Carol Pettinger, of Dyersville, IA.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donald and Kenneth Pettinger; one brother-in-law, John Savolt; one niece, Natalie Pettinger; and several aunts and uncles.
Memorials may be sent to St. Francis Xavier Parish, Beckman High School and the Alzheimer's Association.
