DYERSVILLE, Iowa — LeRoy C. Kern, 87, of Dyersville, Iowa, passed away Sunday, February 10, 2019, at MercyOne-Dubuque Medical Center after a brief illness.

Visitation will be held from 3 until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Avenue SW in Dyersville, where a parish vigil service will be held at 3:30 p.m., a Knights of Columbus Rosary will be held at 5:30 p.m. and an American Legion service will be held at 7. Visitation will continue Wednesday, February 13, 2019, from 9 until 10 a.m., also at the funeral home, prior to services.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville, with burial in the church cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post 137. The Rev. Dennis Quint will officiate.

LeRoy was born October 25, 1931, in Dyersville, the son of Ben and Barbara (Ploesl) Kern. He graduated from Xavier High School with the Class of 1949, and served in the Army. He married Mary Ann Russ on February 13, 1957, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sand Springs.

He began working with his father at Kern Locker, a business he eventually purchased and operated until selling it on January 1, 1980. After retiring from the Locker, he purchased hogs for NFO for a few years and then started a Spring Green franchise in Dyersville.

LeRoy was a member of American Legion Post 137 and the Knights of Columbus Council 1734.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann; two children, Bernie and Carol Kern, both of Dyersville; a brother-in-law, Tony (Alice) Russ, of Hopkinton, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Rita Russ, of Monticello, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Nick Russ.
