Mark A. Hermsen, 61, of Dubuque, and formerly of Dyersville, Iowa, passed away on Friday, May 31, 2019, at his home in Dubuque, after a brief illness.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville. Rev. Dennis Conway will officiate. Visitation will be held from 2 until 8 p.m. on Monday, June 3, 2019, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Avenue SW in Dyersville, where a parish vigil service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 until 10 a.m. on Tuesday prior to funeral services. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.
Mark was born October 30, 1957, in Dubuque, the son of Donald and Grace (Olberding) Hermsen. He married Lois D. Prier on April 30, 1983, in New Vienna, Iowa. She preceded him in death in 2002. He later married Cindy Dolphin Hightower on April 26, 2008, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville. Together, they made their home in Dubuque, where they were members of St. Anthony Catholic Church.
He worked at Schmitt Implement in Holy Cross, Iowa, as a field diesel technician for 35 years.
Survivors include his wife, Cindy; three children, Scott, of Dubuque, and Adam and Cynthia (Philip) Ungs, both of Luxemburg, Iowa; his parents, Donald and Grace Hermsen, of Luxemburg; two stepchildren, Lee (Courtney) and Ashly (Kirby Carpenter) Hightower, both of Dubuque; six grandchildren, Madison Anderson, Adalynn, Gracie and Peter Ungs, and Ellamae and Rayland Hightower; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Eugene Prier, of Dyersville, and Gayle Dolphin, of Cascade; his siblings, Joseph (Lynn) Hermsen, of Farley, Iowa, Gary Hermsen, of Luxemburg, Alan (Debra) Hermsen, of Manchester, Iowa, Mary (Howard) Zuckerman, of Livonia, Mich., Ann (Pat) Dunkel, of Dyersville, Lisa (David) Sweeney, of Tipton, Iowa, Jane (Brian) Bockenstedt, of Center Point, Iowa, Jenny Dolphin, of Des Moines, Iowa, Jeff (Jodi) Dolphin, of Cascade, Linda (Brian) Mosher, of Davenport, Iowa, and Randy (Lisa) Dolphin, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; in-laws, David Prier, of Marina, Calif., Carl (Julie) Prier, Wayne (Beverly) Prier and Donald (Christine) Prier, of Dyersville, Dale (Sandy) Prier, of Hopkinton, Iowa, Allen (Joyce) Prier, of Elkader, Iowa, Mark (Annette) Prier, of Dubuque, Daniel (Kim) Prier, of Dyersville, Elaine (Cletus) Urbain, of Dyersville, and Janice (Wayne L.) Steffen, of Luxemburg.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; his mother-in-law, Lucille Prier; his father-in-law, Donald Dolphin; and one sister-in-law, Patricia (Dale) Demmer.
