Gerald A. Schwendinger, 83, of Sunset Park Place, Dubuque, formerly of Farley, Iowa, died at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Catholic Church, Placid, Iowa, with the Rev. Raymond Burkle officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Placid. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Farley, where there will be a wake service at 3 p.m. and the Sisters of the Presentation will hold a prayer service at 4 p.m.

He was born on Dec. 14, 1919, in Centralia, Iowa, son of William and Mary (Kofmehl) Schwendinger. He received his education in the former St. Joseph's School, Farley.

He married Rita Jasper on May 21, 1947, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley. The couple farmed in the rural Farley area.

He was a member of the Dairy Herd Improvement Association No.2, and St. John's Parish, Placid.

He was a loving husband to his wife, Rita, for 55 years, and a loving father and grandfather. He took a great amount of pride in his registered Holsteins, and his Ford 8N tractors. He also enjoyed spending time golfing in his lifetime.

Surviving are his wife, Rita Schwendinger, of Dubuque; four sons, John (Janet) Schwendinger and Pat (Julie) Schwendinger, both of Dubuque, Bill (Lois) Schwendinger, of Earlville, Iowa, and Don Schwendinger, of Bernard, Iowa; three daughters, Elaine (Herb) Heid, of Dubuque, Mary (Kevin) Klein, of North Liberty, Iowa, and Karen (Rick) Domeyer, of Petersburg, Iowa; 20 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Doris Kehrli, of Independence, Iowa, and Irma J. Schwendinger, of Earlville, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters in infancy, Elaine and Janet Schwendinger; two sons in infancy, Joseph and James Schwendinger; two brothers, Ray Schwendinger and Francis Schwendinger; and a sister, Mary Irene Schwendinger.

A Gerald A. Schwendinger Memorial Fund has been established.

Gerald's family would like to thank Dr. Richardson; the Mercy Medical Center Intensive Care Unit staff; the third floor staff and Mercy Pastoral care; the Manor Care staff; the staff at Sunset Park Place; and the staff of Tri-State Dialysis for all the wonderful care given to Gerald.
