BOLIED IN A BEER VAT

Horrible Death of Nicholas Haas

Nicholas Haas, a lad about fifteen, son of Mr. Haas teamster, an employee in Glab’s Distillery, went up to the top of the vat to stir up the mash Friday, about 10 o’clock a.m. and by some cause fell into the boiling mash. Before he could be rescued he was scalded so that his skin came off over the entire surface of his body. He was taken to his home at the junction of Jackson Street and Eagle Point Avenue, and the best surgical skill summoned to treat him. He was covered entirely over with cotton batting – the treatment usual in such cases – and everything that could soothe the sufferer was applied. He complained more of his internal than external pain, however, after a few moments before 4 o’clock p.m. fell asleep, a sleep from which he never awoke. About five o’clock he breathed his last – his life going out apparently with little suffering.
