Gertrude G. Clemens, 88, of Luther Manor Nursing and Retirement Center, formerly of 977 Mount Loretta Ave., died at 12:50 p.m. Monday, May 1, 2000, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m.

She was born on May 5, 1911, in Dubuque, daughter of George G. and Rose Mary (Benda) Luke. She married Leo J. Clemens on Oct. 17, 1935, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church.

She was a secretary for the late Frederick Stampfer from 1930 to 1935. She and her husband established the family business, The Leo Clemens Microfilm Service, which she managed after her husband's death on Dec. 29, 1959. She later worked at Loras College and Geisler Brothers Co.

She was a 1929 graduate of Dubuque Senior High School and the former Bayless Business school in 1930. She was a volunteer with the Dubuque Chapter American Red Cross for 60 years and was a member of the board of directors for several years. She was an original member of St. Anne's Catholic Mother's Study Club. She also was a charter member of the Marion Club of St. Columbkille's Parish and founder of St. Helena Catholic Mother's Study Club. She was a charter member of the Mercy Hospital Service Club, where she was a past president and volunteer for 50 years. For many years, she was a volunteer with the University of Iowa Crippled Children Clinics.

A devoted grandmother to her grandchildren, she was very thoughtful to her friends and neighbors and was known for her volunteer work. She was an avid bridge player.

Surviving are a daughter, Leanne (Charles P.) Cox, of Dubuque; a son, David (Karen) Clemens, of Peosta, Iowa; five grandchildren, Cynthia (Erik) Cox-Thorland, of Rochester, Minn., Jennifer (Daniel) Clemens-Conlon, of Peosta, Kevin (Kelly) Clemens, of Dubuque, and Kristin and Lisa Clemens, both of Dubuque; three sisters, Rose Mary Imhoff, of Baltimore, Carol F. Salz, of Tempe, Ariz., and Lida (Glen) Kremer, of Lansing, Ill.; a brother-in-law, Paul F. Bisanz, of Peosta; and many nieces and nephews who were very special to her.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Jane Bisanz; and a brother, George C. Luke.

A Gertrude G. Clemens Memorial Fund has been established. Memorials may also be given to the Dubuque Chapter American Red Cross.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Schope, Laurie, and the staffs of Mercy Medical Center and Luther Manor for their wonderful care of their mother.
