Thomas W. Breitbach, 87, of Dubuque, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at home,surrounded by family.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 9, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas Zinkula officiating. Military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque American Legion Post 6.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, is entrusted with arrangements.
Tom was born on Jan. 30, 1924, in Dubuque, son of Herbert and Mary Alice (Ryan) Breitbach. He served his country with the Army during World War II.
He married Arlene R. Kopp on June 12, 1948, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Tom was employed as an insurance agent for Prudential for 18 years, and then as Dubuque County Treasurer for many years until his retirement on June 30, 1988.
He was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church, American Legion Post 6, and a board member of the Dubuque Boys Club. He also was involved with Power of Prayer, and was a devoted volunteer at the Tool Library. He officiated basketball, baseball and football games in the tri-state area for many years. Tom was an inductee as well as a board member of the Dubuque County Baseball Hall of Fame.
People always knew where Tom went because of the trail of Tootsie Rolls he left behind with adults and children alike. He was a loving family man and devoted husband who will be deeply missed.
Those left to honor his memory are his wife of
63 years, Arlene, of Dubuque; his children, Stephen (Diane) Breitbach, of Hazel Green, Wis., Daniel (Katy) Breitbach, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Robert (Cathy) Breitbach, Barbara (James) Blaser and Jane (Steven) Walker, all of Dubuque, David (Lynn) Breitbach, of Panora, Iowa, Ann (Isaias) Alvarenga and Mike (Angie) Breitbach, both of Dubuque; a son-in-law, Mike Corbett, of Iowa City; 39 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard (Kitty) Breitbach; and two sisters, Rita (Tom) Luksetich and Jeanette Schwartz.He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Patricia Corbett; two brothers, Herbert and Donald Breitbach; two sisters, Mary Elayne Breitbach and Ann Yvonne Grant; two infant siblings; and a brother-in-law, Donald Kopp.
Memorials may be given to Hospice of Dubuque and Holy Spirit Parish.
