Heart failure - that was the cause of death of William H. Meyers, of Peosta, on Thursday, Aug.
9th, 1894. Thursday evening, Coroner Gregorie
was notified by telegraph that the body of William
H. Meyers, a resident of Peosta, had been found on
the track a short distance from that place. The
Coroner went out that evening, and held an inquest.
The facts brought out were to the effect that Meyers and another section man had been engaged
all day up to about 4 o'clock in the afternoon
cutting weeds beside the track. About the hour
mentioned, they sat down and waited until an
approaching train had passed. Then they arose
and started up the track, but had not gone far
when Meyers, without uttering a word of an
exclamation of any kind, fell forward and lay
motionless on the ground. His companion lifted
him up but he was limp and lifeless. He had
died almost instantly.
The other man then went back to the village, and
secured assistance when the remains were removed
to the late home of the deceased.
The Coroner's jury, consisting of John S. Smead,
J.P. Moore, and P.J. Spillane, returned a verdict
that the deceased came to his death from causes
unknown, but supposed to be heart failure.
Mr. Meyers was a well known and highly esteemed
resident of Peosta. He was an honest and industrious man, and his death will be regretted.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine, and two
children, George, and Martha.
The funeral was held Saturday at 2:30 PM at his
home. Dr. Miller of the Epworth Methodist Church
conducted the services. Interment was in the
cemetery near Peosta.
