Death of Old Settlor
~
Mr. Edward McLean departed this life at 10 o’clock a. m., Wednesday, Dec. 6, 1876, at his residence on Dodge Street, aged 52 years. Mr. Mclean came to this country, accompanied by his father, mother, brothers and sister in 1844. He was the son of the late James and Catherine McLean, who died a few years ago. He is the brother of Mr. William McLean of Julien, Daniel McLean of this city, Frank of Whitewater Township and a brother-in-law of Mr. Patrick Cowen formerly of Whitewater. He was married in St. Louis, April 6, 1854 to Miss Catherine Walsh, daughter of a respectable farmer, who lived in the same vicinity with Mr. McLean in Ireland. He was a number one mechanic in the capacity of stonemason and plasterer, for which business he followed for several years after he arrived here, where Mr. McLean made himself notable as a good tradesman. He therefore changed Dubuque for a further mold of experiment of his successful professing. It was at this time that he became acquainted with his now beloved wife. Shortly after his marriage he again returned to Dubuque, which he has since made his home, and by industry and economy accumulated an amount of property which leaves his family in good circumstances.

Four years ago he visited Ireland, the land of his birth, and spent a few months with his friends which he enjoyed very much. After his return he continued keeping a grocery store on Dodge Street, with his son James, in which they have been remarkably successful. Since last July he has been afflicted with a complication of diseases, which he bore with patience and resignation till the Lord was pleased to call him to a happier home. He will long be remembered as an indulgent father, kind husband and respectful neighbor.

The funeral will take place Friday at 8 o’clock from his late residence on Dodge Street, to the Cathedral, and thence to St. Philomena Cemetery. Friends of the family are invited to attend.
