EPWORTH, IA. Feb. 22 – Matthew Carroll, a well-known citizen of Taylor Township, died at his home at 12:15 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 18, after an illness of several weeks from congestion of the brain. Matthew Carroll was born in Ireland 74 years ago and came to the United States with his parents when a child. The family settled in Ohio, but in the spring of 1858 removed to Bankston, Dubuque County, Iowa. Later deceased moved to Taylor Township where has since resided for the past fifty years. He has been a good and worthy citizen, an agreeable neighbor and firm friend.

On June 9, 1863, he was united to Miss Mary O’Keefe at St. Clements, Bankston, Ia., who with the following children survive him. James, of Epworth; Matthew, Jr., of Epworth; Anna, wife of M. E. Bierman, of Waterloo; John and Agnes at home. Four children preceded him to the grave. Mary, wife of Peter F. Sweeney; of died in 1907, Joseph, Daniel and Isabelle who died during the diphtheria epidemic in 1874. Mr. Carroll is also survived by his sister, Mrs. Geo. Freeman, the last of the remaining family of seven children. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren. The funeral was held Saturday at 10 o’clock at St. John’s Church and services were conducted by Revd. J. McNamara, assisted by Rev. D. J. Slattery and Rev. J. J. Loneregan. The remains were laid to rest in the Catholic Cemetery beside his daughter.

The pallbearers were Michael McDermott, Martin Kennedy, James Casey, John Callahan, Tom Horsefield, Frank Bralley and Joseph O’Meara. The funeral was largely attended and those from aboard were: Henry Carroll, of Julien; Dennis and Bridget O’Keefe of Dougherty; also Mary and Agnes O’Loughlin of Dubuque.
