HAD MANY FRIENDSThe late John Charles Lewis, who died Friday at his home, 26 Rock Street, Sessex was born in Selser County, Delaware august 17, 1834. At an early age he joined the church in Barrytown, Delaware, and was a consistent member all his life.
In July, 1854, he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Harris at Philadelphia, Pa. To this union was born eight children. In 1864, his wife died and he was married again in 1865 to Miss Mary S. Martin of Newark, New Jersey. To this second union was born five children, two daughters and three sons. His second wife died and left five motherless children. who he raised to young manhood and womanhood.
In 1897 he was married to Mrs. Lucy Harland at Davenport, Ia. Who survives him, also two daughters and three sons, Mrs. Mary E. Shepherd, of Goodland, Kansas; Miss Gertrude Lewis, A teacher at Guthrie, Oklahoma; D. S. Lewis, a medical student at Howard University, Washington, D. C.; H. O. Lewis, of Des Moines, and Leonard of this city. He is further survived by a sister living at Felton, Delaware, and seven grandchildren.
Mr. Lewis was widely known and had many warm friends who mourn his demise. He was a devoted husband and father, a kind neighbor and a through Christian.
