DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Walter W. Burkle, 90, of Dyersville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2017, at home.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017, at Kramer Funeral Home, 750 12th Ave SW in Dyersville, where American Legion Post 137 will conduct a service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Friday, Oct. 6, 2017, from 9 to 10 a.m. at Kramer Funeral Home, prior to funeral services.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, 2017, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, in Dyersville, with burial in the church cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post 137. Rev. Dennis Quint will officiate.

Walter was born May 19, 1927, in Dyersville the son of Paul and Anna (Olberding) Burkle. He served in the Army during WWII as a military policeman in New York. He married Verna Honkomp on Nov. 25, 1948, at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, in Petersburg. Together they farmed east of Dyersville raising 13 children. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1734, American Legion Post 137 and Dyersville Golf and Country Club. He enjoyed playing and watching golf, playing cards, bowling and following the L.A. Dodgers and the Green Bay Packers.

Survivors include his wife, Verna; his children, Mary Ann (Dick) Recker, Linda (Norm) Chambers, Elaine (Dave) Schieltz, Donna (Dave) Riniker, Mark (Karla), Glen (Kathy), Earl (Barb), Marv (Diane), Merle (Pam), Karla (Wayne) Dille, Bill (Wendy), and Lee (Michelle); a daughter-in-law, Judy Burkle; 39 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter; 2 sisters, Betty Gassmann and Doris (Alvin) Hermsen; 2 brothers, Harold (Gladys) and Gerald (Rose Ann); sisters-in-law, Theresa Burkle and Lorraine Burkle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, Lawrence and Margaret Honkomp; a son, Neal; a grandson, Spencer Arnold; a sister, Lorraine (Joe) Stephan; four brothers, Charles (Luetta), George (Thelma), Bernard and Leon Burkle; in-laws, Jerome Hermsen, John Gassmann and Gilbert (Helen) Honkomp.
