Sister Mary Magdalen Madigan died at Saint Clara Convent, December 9, 1916 in the 82nd year of her age and the 52nd of her religious profession.

Born in Ireland (Kilkenny), Sister Magdalen came with her family to America when quite young (Vernon Township). Her family were deeply religious, Father Alberic Madigan (her brother) becoming a Trappist priest at New Melleray Monastery. Right Reverend Clement Smith, second Bishop of Dubuque, advised Miss Madigan to join Father Mazzuchelli's Sisters in Benton. For many years, Sister Magdalen was the Community Bursar and worked diligently to make the limited means go as far as possible.

Sister is buried at Sinsinawa Mounds in a private cemetery for nuns.

note: Born Mary Margaret Madigan , she recieved the habit in 1864 and was the 35th woman to join the congregation. Sister Mary Marlene Walsh, OSF is her grandniece (from file).

Her parents were Patrick & Margaret Madigan.
