Virginia L. Wing (1930-2018)

Virginia L. “Ginny” Wing, 87, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away peacefully on September 19th, 2018 at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque.

Funeral Service will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 24th, 2018 at Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road with Rev. Dianne Grace officiating. Family and friends may gather from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at Linwood Cemetery.

Virginia was born on November 12th, 1930 in Louvain, Belgium, the daughter of Snowden and Myrl (Garretson) Clary. At the age of five, she and her parents moved to Tennessee, Wisconsin, and eventually to Maquoketa, Iowa.

She is a graduate of Maquoketa High School, where she participated in band, chorus, theater arts and loved to play the piano.

On May 29th, 1951, Virginia married her Highschool sweetheart, Jack L. Wing, at the Maquoketa Methodist Parsonage. Jack and Virginia raised their family in Maquoketa, Davenport and Dubuque before retiring to Nita Ho Valley near St. Donatus, where they lived for 25 years.

She worked at both Xavier and Mercy Hospitals as unit secretary for 23 years.

Virginia enjoyed bowling, being with her friends in T.O.P.S., and was an Honorary member of the Luxembourg Society.

Virginia had a great smile, an infectious laugh, and a generous heart. She was a wonderful daughter, loving wife, doting mother and grandmother, and a loyal friend. She loved traveling, reading, playing croquet, and dancing. Her three trips to Luxembourg and Belgium in her later years were a dream come true. Most of all, she loved and treasured her family.

She is survived by her three children: Valerie (Paul) McNally of Iowa City, Martin (Heidi) Wing, and Sue (Don) Broadwell of Dubuque; Seven grandchildren and their spouses, and six great-grandchildren

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Jack; her parents; one sister, one brother; and one step-brother.

Memorials may be given to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or Hospice of Dubuque.

The family is grateful for the amazing care given to Mom by all the employees of Stonehill Care Center. They are a community of pure love and Christ-like compassion. Mom was touched by the cards, notes and visits from friends which so lifted her spirits.
