Mrs. Mildred Jane "Millie", “Annie” (Elliott) Kalb, 94, died at 5:15 pm, Wednesday, July 11, at home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 18th, 2018 at St. Raphael's Cathedral, 231 Bluff Street, with Rev. Msgr. Thomas Toale officiating and Rev. John O’Connor concelebrating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 17th at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road where a wake service will be held at 3:00 p.m.
Millie was born in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Cleophas and Hilda (Anners) Elliott. She attended Holy Ghost Elementary School and Dubuque Senior High School, graduating in 1941. She was a member of Catholic Daughters of America, Court Dubuque, Dubuque YWCA and St. Raphael's Cathedral. She was a member of the Dubuque Historical Society, past member of Dubuque Women's Bowling Association and the 1941 Senior High Alumni Luncheon Group.
Millie Married Dr. Anthony J. Kalb on October 22, 1949 in Dubuque. He preceded her in death on August 14, 1992. Together they raised twelve children: Dr. Tony (Susan) Kalb, Peter (Kathy) Kalb, Mark (Cheri) Kalb, of Dubuque, David Kalb of Brisbane, California, Dr. Ann Marie (Peter) Arrigo of Denver, Colorado, Mimi Kalb of Bloomington, Minnesota: Laura Rivisto of Prior Lake Minnesota, Martha Thomas of Onalaska, Wisconsin, Patrick (Pam) Kalb of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Paul (Myra Jo) Kalb, Andy (Becky Conlon) Kalb and Karla (Tom) Weber of Dubuque.
Before marriage, Millie worked as a private secretary at Western Auto Supply Company in Dubuque and was an official reporter and correspondent for the Western Auto Supply magazine with headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri.
Millie was a volunteer worker at Wahlert High School for many years and donated years of service to the YMCA/YWCA Swim Programs and Swim Team. She headed Boys' Scout troops in the early lives of her seven sons. She was a great all-around cook, leaving family members and friends to covet her secret recipes. She was an accomplished poet and short story writer. Many of her short stories and poems were published in our local Julien's Journal and several other journals and poetry magazines throughout the area. Millie loved nothing more than a good hand-written note to send or receive. Over the years she graced hundreds of people near and far with her beautifully scripted letters and cards. She enjoyed traveling, sewing, reading and following the Iowa Hawkeye Football and Basketball teams. She always enjoyed keeping up with the sports in which her grandchildren were involved. More recently she enjoyed her grandson, Matthew Thomas, playing on Iowa State's Basketball Team.
A loving wife, caring sister, precious mother, devoted grandmother and great-grandmother, Millie was a unique, vibrant woman with a huge capacity to love. "She was the one with the love and the comfort, and she was the first one there to put her arms around you. That was our mother". The world is clearly a much better place for Millie having dropped by for a while and we will all deeply miss her.
Millie's eleven surviving children, their spouses, and daughter-in-law Kathy Kalb, are left to lovingly cherish her memory, along with thirty-two grandchildren: Megan Kalb, Tara (Jon) Boyes, Gina (Cody) Page, Jayme Kalb, Rachel (Jason) Padilla, Katie Kalb, Lisa (Marty) Attea, Lynn (Jason) Breithaupt, Kelly (Darin) Mills, Alec Arrigo, Nicholas Arrigo, Samantha Arrigo, Heidi (Cory) Goblirsch, Nicholas Rivisto, Molly Rivisto, Mary Kate (Taylor) Case, Tony Thomas, Matthew Thomas, Josie Thomas, Tyler (Molly) Kalb, Courtney Kalb, Parker Kalb, MaKenzie Kalb, Frederic Kalb, Addison Kalb, Elliott Kalb, Sean Kalb, Jack Kalb, Christine Kalb, Jake Weber, Ryan Weber, Jenna Millie Weber and 17 great-grandchildren (including Millie Jane Breithaupt and Millie Sue Boyes), and twins due in September. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, Dr. Thomas J. Kalb, of Young America, MN and a sister-in-law, Sister Marie Therese Kalb, OSF, of Dubuque.
She was preceded in death by her husband A.J., her parents, Cleophas and Hilda Elliott, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bert P. and Mamie Kalb, a son, Peter Kalb, a grandson, Lucas Kalb, three brothers, Cleophas "Bud" Elliott, Clarence "Mike" Elliott, Frederick Elliott, and six sisters, Genevieve (Kenneth) Lochner, Katherine Elliott, Delores Elliott, Marianne (Wilfred) Hemmer, Virginia (Bernard) Holzer, Jane Elliott, and Kalb in-laws, Rev. Bertrum J. Kalb, Rev. Robert L. Kalb, Rev. Howard E. Kalb, Richard J. (Bernadine) Kalb, John T. "Jack" ( Elizabeth) Kalb and Delores Kalb
A Memorial Fund has been established in Millie’s name. Donations will be given to Stonehill Care Center and Sisters of St. Francis.
