EPWORTH, Iowa - Verna R. Oberbroeckling, 84, of Rockville, Md., formerly of Epworth, passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at Ennoble Manor, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 9, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Epworth, with the Rev. Dennis Cain officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church. Reiff Funeral Home, Epworth, is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on Aug. 18, 1927, in Epworth, daughter of William and Catherine (Pottebaum) Oberbroeckling. She graduated from Epworth High School and attended Briar Cliff College in Sioux City. In 1949, she graduated from Clarke College in Dubuque.

Verna started her teaching career in the Dubuque Community Schools. In just a few years, she had the opportunity to teach the United States servicemen's children in Germany. For five years, she was teaching and traveling all over Europe. After coming back to the U.S., she spent time getting her Master's degree at the Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Verna then taught for 40 years in Montgomery County, Md., and later retired in Maryland. Every summer she was back to Iowa to get acquainted with new nieces and nephews and family members.

Verna loved to travel and tell about the places she had been.

Surviving are three sisters and a brother, Sr. Lucilla Oberbroeckling, OSF, of Mount St. Francis, Dubuque, Rosemary Noonan, of Bernard, Virginia (Leo) Pfab, of Dubuque, and Edward (Janet) Oberbroeckling, of Epworth; many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, Carol Oberbroeckling, of Epworth; and an aunt, Kate Pottebaum, of Dyersville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, William J.; a sister, Marcella; a brother-in-law, Harlan Noonan; and a sister-in-law, Rita Oberbroeckling..

The family wishes to extend a big thank you to all the health care people that have been there for Verna over the last years, especially Ennoble Manor Care Center, where she spent her last days.
