CASCADE, Iowa - Dr. William J. Mehrl, M.D., 92, of Cascade, Iowa, died Monday, January 25, 2016, at 2:08 a.m. at Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque, Iowa.

Friends and relatives of William may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 28, 2016, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Cascade, Iowa, where a KC Rosary will be held at 6 p.m. and a wake service will be held at 7 p.m.

Services for William will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 29, 2016, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade, Iowa, with Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Cascade, Iowa, with full military honors afforded by the Cascade American Legion post #528.

He was born July 31, 1923, in Dubuque, Iowa, son of John and Mary (Klinkhamer) Mehrl. He received his education in the Dubuque schools. He is a graduate of Loras College in Dubuque and the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He served his internship in Detroit, MI. He practiced medicine in Manchester, Iowa, until 1960 at which time he moved to Cascade where he continued to practice medicine until his retirement in 2001. He regularly made house calls and once made a house call in a blizzard on cross country skis.

On September 8, 1951, he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Peiffer at St. John's Catholic Church in Delhi, Iowa. She preceded him in death on September 12, 2007.

He was a World War II Army Air Force Veteran. He was retained in the U.S. Air Force to serve as an Radio/Radar Instructor for B-52 bomber crews.

He was a member of St. Matthias Parish in Cascade, where he played the pipe organ for many years, a member of the Cascade American Legion Post #528, and the Cascade Knights of Columbus-Council #2001.

He is survived by 10 children, Margaret "Peggy" (Eric) Hoekstra, of Hollond, MI, Catherine Ann (John) Bennett, of Columbus, OH, Dave Joseph (Rong-ti) Mehrl, of Plano, TX, William Gregory Mehrl, of Lockport, IL, Julie Ann Mehrl, of Albuquerque, NM, John Paul (Cheryl) Martin-Mehrl, of Arlington Heights, IL, Thomas James (Sandy) Mehrl, of Crete, IL, Susan Marie Gilbert, of Kingman, AZ, Mary Jane Mehrl, of Dubuque, IA, and Ann Elizabeth Mehrl, of Dubuque, IA; 6 grandchildren; 3 great grandchild; and 1 brother, John "Rusty" Mehrl, of Dubuque, IA.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Sr. Martha Mehrl; and two brothers, Robert and Martin Mehrl.
