NEW VIENNA, Iowa - John L. Wilgenbusch, 79, of New Vienna, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, following an extended illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, New Vienna, with the Rev. Richard Gaul officiating. Burial will be in St. Boniface Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7736 and American Legion Post 656. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m., and a VFW and American Legion service at 5 p.m.

Mr. Wilgenbusch farmed in the New Vienna area until his retirement in 1985.

He was born on May 30, 1925, in New Vienna, son of Frank and Sophia (Vonderhaar) Wilgenbusch. He married Rita E. "Betty" Wolf on Nov. 9, 1957, in Dyersville.

He was a member of St. Boniface Parish, the Edward W. Lake VFW Post 7736, the Sherrman-Peterson American Legion Post 656 and New Vienna Mutual Insurance, where he served as vice president and director for 13 years.

John enjoyed fishing, gardening and watching his grandchildren at sporting events.

Surviving are his wife, Rita "Betty;" two daughters, Carol (Mike Strowmatt) Driscoll and Joan (Russ Pettinger) Weber, and two sons, Tom (Heidi) Wilgenbusch and Dennis (Tammy) Wilgenbusch, all of Dyersville; 15 grandchildren, Melissa Wilgenbusch, of Mesa, Ariz., Tara Driscoll, of San Francisco, Chad (Abby Ostwinkle) Driscoll, of Luxemburg, Vanessa and Sara Driscoll, both of Dyersville, Andrea (Jason) Todd, of Fort Benning, Ga., Brooke and Dylan Weber, both of Dyersville, Whitney and Quincy Wilgenbusch, both of Dyersville, Amber Wallace, of Hiawatha, Emily Wilgenbusch, of Dubuque, and Casey, Drew and Shea Wilgenbusch, all of Dyersville; four sisters, Valeria Schwers, Anna Mae Wright and Esther Knutson, all of Rockford, Ill., and Sr. Grace Marie Wilgenbusch, FSPA, of La Crosse, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Helen Wilgenbusch, of Manchester; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Carigan Wilgenbusch; three brothers, Emil, Joseph and Albin Wilgenbusch; and two sisters, Barbara Graham and Marie Schwers.
