NEW VIENNA, Iowa - Lawrence P. Steffen, 67, of New Vienna, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque, following a short illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Luxemburg, with the Rev. Thomas Zinkula officiating. Burial will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, where there will be a flag presentation by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7736, of New Vienna. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m.

Mr. Steffen was a lifelong farmer.

He was born on May 26, 1937, in New Vienna, son of Nicholas and Theresa (Gaul) Steffen. He married LaDonna E. Hunt on Dec. 28, 1959, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Earlville; she preceded him in death on Sept. 21, 1998.

He was in the National Guard and Army Reserves.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, Luxemburg.

He enjoyed collecting two-cylinder tractors and attending tractor-cades and farm shows.

Lawrence also enjoyed reminiscing about playing basketball as a youth for Holy Trinity School and his days in military service at Fort Hood, Texas, and Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

Surviving are a daughter, Kathleen M. (Joey) McFarland, of New Vienna, and a son, Gary M. (Judy) Steffen, of Luxemburg; two grandchildren, Aimee and Brian Steffen, both of Luxemburg; and a brother, Donald Steffen, of Edgewood.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Agatha Lake; and two brothers, Alphonse and Leander Steffen.
