DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Joseph C. Meis, 82, of Dyersville, formerly of Holy Cross, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, at Heritage Manor, Dubuque, following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Podhajsky officiating. Burial will be in St. Boniface Cemetery, New Vienna. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kramer Funeral Home, Holy Cross, where there will be a parish scripture service at 2:30 p.m.

He was born on Jan. 25, 1924, in New Vienna, son of William and Josephine (Hoefer) Meis. He married Florence A. Steffensmeier on Feb. 5, 1948, in Dyersville. Together they farmed in the Holy Cross area until retirement in 1984, when they moved to town.

Joe's hobbies became gardening, both flowers around the house and vegetables (especially potatoes) behind the house. He enjoyed animals, feeding the birds and visiting with people. It was important to Joe to attend Mass regularly.

Surviving are his wife, Florence; a son, Bill, of Platteville; two daughters, Donna (Lial) Prier, of Ryan, and Karla Meis, of Deerfield, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Nick, Laurie, Julie and Brittani Meis, Melissa, Holly and Clinton Prier and Kevin Keiler; two sisters, Leora Willenbring, of Dyersville, and Jeanette (Elmer) Hilkin, of Dubuque; and many brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a 9-month-old sister, Helen.
