Roger H. "Hip" Lindecker, 67, of VA Medical Center, St. Cloud, Minn., formerly of 615 Kaufmann Ave., Dubuque, passed away at 10:37 a.m. Sunday, April 19, 2009, at St. Cloud Hospital, St. Cloud.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 25, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded by members of the Dubuque Marines Corps League. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 24, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 6:30 p.m.

He was born on Oct. 13, 1941, in Dubuque, son of George and Clara (Schmitt) Lindecker.

Roger served as a military policeman with the Army during the Vietnam War in Vietnam.

He was employed at Flexsteel Industries as a forklift driver for 23 years until his retirement on April 10, 1992. He also took care of his mother until her death at the age of 93 in 2003.

He was a member of Holy Ghost Parish.

In his earlier years, Roger liked hunting and fishing. He enjoyed taking his nieces and nephews fishing and recounting stories from their trips. They also enjoyed going to the drive-in movies together. His nephews looked forward to target practice with Roger. He loved old John Wayne movies, 1950s and 1960s music and was a trivia "wiz." He grew huge potatoes and tomatoes and flowers. Roger liked dogs and enjoyed when his family brought their dogs to visit, and always had treats for them. Roger lived very frugally but was so generous with everyone.

Surviving are a brother, Kenneth H. (Barb) Lindecker, of Asbury, Iowa; a sister, Rose J. (Joseph) Girot, of East Dubuque, Ill.; two sisters-in-law, Betty Lindecker and Mary Lou Lindecker, of Dubuque; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Calvin and Gene Lindecker.

A Roger H. Lindecker Memorial Fund has been established.

Online condolences may be left for the family at www.behrfuneralhome.com.

The family would like to thank the staff of the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud who gave Roger tender, loving care and were like his "family" away from home.
