Walter William Davis, 75, of 2833 Van Buren, died Friday, March 8, 2002, at home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where there will be a parish wake service at 3 p.m.

Mr. Davis worked at the former Dubuque Packing Co. for 391/2 years, retiring in 1982 when the pack closed. He also worked at the Ground Round and was a security guard at Mount Carmel in Dubuque.

He was born on Sept. 24, 1926, in Turkey River, Iowa, son of Thomas and Mary (Kauffman) Davis. He married Rita Mae Goedert on Nov. 4, 1944, at St. Anthony's Rectory.

He attended Prescott and Jefferson High School. He served in the Army during World War II from Dec. 6, 1944, to October 1946. He was with the Army 306th Transportation Corps in Japan as a technician fifth grade.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 508, having served as commander. He also was a member of the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque and St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, bowling, playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was also a die-hard Cubs fan. He loved his guardian angel, Rita.

Surviving are his wife, Rita, of Dubuque; four sons, Walter E. "Wally" (Cookie) Davis, James (Cindy) Davis, John (Lorna) Davis and Terry (Cherie) Davis, all of Dubuque; two daughters, Susan (Ralph) Kieffer and Bonnie (Ron) Hume, both of Dubuque; 22 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; many, many nieces and nephews; a brother, Albert (Adele) Davis, of Dubuque; and a sister, Bertha "Sis" Phillips, of Port Orchard, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, a granddaughter, four sisters, three brothers and three stepbrothers.

The family would like to thank The Finley Hospital; Finley Homecare; the VNA, especially Debra McGinnis; Dubuque Internal Medicine, especially Dr. Sorenson, Leanne, Dr. Longo, and the other doctors that were on call; Hospice of Dubuque, especially Mary, Sheila, Lynn and many more; also Sharon and Aimee who were volunteers who watched our dad while Rita enjoyed some free time. I, Rita, would also like to thank my sons and daughters for all the help they gave me during Dad's illness.
