RICKARDSVILLE, Iowa - James C. Ross, 57, of Rickardsville, formerly of San Diego, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, from a sudden illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rickardsville. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, Dubuque, where there will be a wake service at 3 p.m. Friends also may call after 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.

He was born on July 30, 1949, in Rutland, Vt., son of Clyde and Margaret (Courcelle) Ross.

James moved to California when he was 6-years-old and resided there from 1955 to the spring of 2000. He then moved to Rickardsville. He married June Goebel Pierce on Dec. 28, 1999, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rickardsville.

He served with the Army in Vietnam and received the Purple Heart medal.

James worked at BF Goodrich Corp. in San Diego, formerly ROHR Industries. He was self-employed while living in Rickardsville.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Tri-State Vietnam Veterans Association of Dubuque and the Cattle Hoof Trimmer Association.

James loved to fish in Bankston Creek, especially for trout. He enjoyed riding, especially his horse, Henry. He also enjoyed the outdoors and camping in the desert. James loved to laugh and had an exceptional sense of humor.

Surviving are his wife, June Ross, of Rickardsville; a son, Steven, of Guttenberg, Iowa; three daughters, Christine Ross, Crystal Ross and Angela (Shane) Knisely, all of San Diego; a stepdaughter, Alexis (Garrett) Mathews, of San Diego; three stepgrandchildren, McKinzie, Tyler and Alex Mathews; his mother, Margaret Ross, of Dewey, Ariz.; and two sisters, Carol (Pete) Rickman and Terri (Danny) Olsen, both of Dewey.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clyde.

A James C. Ross Memorial Fund has been established.
