Glen "Junior" Smock 1923-2016

Glen "Junior" Smock, 93, of Dubuque, passed away Friday, September 16, 2016, at home, surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 21, 2016, at Hoffmann Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main Street, where friends may call from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 20. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens with military honors.

Glen was born April 30, 1923, in Wood Center, IA, son of Jacob G. "Jake" and Jessie (Morley) Smock. He married Mattie "Belle" Green, August 8, 1943, in Reno, Nevada. She preceded him in death January 19, 2007.

He graduated from high school in Greeley, Iowa.

Glen was a WWII Veteran of the U.S. Navy from 1942 thru 1945. He was a 1st Class Signalman. He participated in the September 17, 2013, in "The Honor Flight" at the Dubuque Airport. He was deeply touched by it. Glen was a member of the American Legion, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a life member and Past Commander of Amvets Post 13 in Dubuque County.

He farmed for 10 years before going to work for the Dubuque Packing Co. He retired from the Pack after 30 years. He enjoyed camping, fishing, horseshoes, bowling, playing cards and going to his Amvet's meetings. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandkids.

Glen initiated the renaming of Highway 3 to "American Veteran Memorial Highway" in February 1992. Here, to his undying dedication to veterans, the official designation of the name change was accomplished in the spring of 1994.

Surviving are two sons, Larry (Vickie) Smock, of Macqunquie, PA, and Garry Smock, of Dubuque; three daughters, Terry Moser, of Edgewood, IA, Kerry (Gary) Massey, of Dubuque; and Gerry Smock, of Dubuque; 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; a son-in-law, Lynn Wittman, and a sister-in-law, Linda Smock.

Glen was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years; a daughter Sherry (Smock) Wittman; 2 sons, Barry and Perry Smock; a grandson, Joey Moser; his parents; a brother, Richard Smock; and a sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Gene Amthauer.
