Marian A. Cavanaugh, 78, of 2555 Maryville Drive, died peacefully at 5 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, at home, surrounded by family.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service 5:30 p.m.

Mrs. Cavanaugh taught mathematics and home economics and retired from Washington Junior High School after teaching there for 19 years.

She was born on Nov. 2, 1927, in Los Angeles, daughter of Frank and Genevieve (Zimmel) Brady. She married Donald G. Cavanaugh on May 25, 1951, in O'Neill, Neb.; he preceded her in death on July 15, 1996.

She was a graduate of Wayne State University, Wayne, Neb.

She was a member of St. Anthony's Parish, the Dubuque Retired Teachers and the Iowa Retired Teachers Association.

She was an accomplished needleworker and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and needlepoint. She also was an avid card player. Marian and Don enjoyed traveling and they spent their winters in Arizona. Friends were very important to Marian and she enjoyed being with her teaching friends. Her greatest joy was being with her family and especially her grandchildren.

Surviving are a son, Daniel F. (Dianne) Cavanaugh, of West Bend, Wis.; two daughters, Diane A. (Mark) Treanor and Deborah J. Meyer, both of Dubuque; eight grandchildren, Megan, Sean and Shannon Cavanaugh, Emily, Jackie and Amanda Treanor and Amy and Michelle Meyer; a sister, Jane (Robert) Peterson, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a sister-in-law, Em Brady, of Big Bear, Calif.; and nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her brother, James Brady.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice of Dubuque, 2255 Kennedy Road, Dubuque, 52002 and to the Dubuque Humane Society, 175 N. Crescent Ridge, Dubuque, 52003.

The family wishes to send a special thank-you to the nurses and staff of Hospice of Dubuque, especially Jane, Renee and Lisa, for their loving care and concern for Marian and the family. They would also like to thank dear friends and neighbors, Sherry and Cindy, for their love and support.
