Barney Joe Hankner was born on May 28, 1954 in Waverly, Iowa, to Theodore Adam August and Evelyn (Sorensen) Hankner. He was a graduate of Waverly High School and received his Associates Degree in Retail Management from Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa. On May 1, 1976 he married Melissa Ann Witt in Davenport, Iowa, and they had two children, Molly and Danny.
Barney first worked for Shultz Bros. in Maquoketa as store manager. He then co-owned and operated Gambles/True Value Hardware Store for many years with Dean and Maxine LeClere. In the early 1990's he became involved with the insurance industry selling mainly supplemental policies for EMC National Life and Central United Life. Following a triple bypass surgery in 2010, he began working regularly with Stub Pape, doing home improvement and property maintenance.
Barney was an active member of Faith Community Church where he served as a trustee & volunteer janitor. He enjoyed fishing in his earlier years, and as an avid railroad enthusiast, he took great joy in watching trains and running his own model trains, of which his favorite railway was the Chicago Great Western. He enjoyed starting his mornings having a cup of coffee with the guys at KJ's in Maquoketa, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Barney was a humble man, a loving husband, a warm and caring father and grandfather, and a loyal friend. He will be missed far more than he ever knew.
Those left to honor Barney's memory include his wife, Melissa Ann Hankner of Maquoketa, IA; children, Molly (Mike) Heiar of Dubuque, IA, and Danny (Megan) Hankner of Davenport, IA; and 4 grandchildren, Henry and Joy Heiar and Macy and Charlee Hankner. He was preceded in death by his parents, and grandson Caleb Hankner.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Barney J. Hankner memorial fund has been established.
