Thomas J. McDonough, 82, of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on Monday, September 11th, 2017, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, surrounded by his family.

Funeral mass will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, September 16th, 2017, at Holy Spirit Parish, Sacred Heart Church with the Very. Rev. Dwayne Thoman officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery. With Military honors accorded by American Legion Post #6. Family and friends may gather after 9:00 a.m. Saturday, at the church until time of funeral mass. Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory is handling arrangements.

Tom was born on May 18, 1935, in Dubuque, Iowa the son of Charles and Anna (Tobin) McDonough. He attended St. Patrick's Grade School and Loras Academy; and he served in the US Army and the Iowa National Guard for eight years.

He married Connie Nicks on May 17, 1958, at Sacred Heart Church in Dubuque.

Tom worked for the former Dubuque Packing Company, Skowronek Jewelry, and at Mount Carmel for the BVM Sisters.

Tom's Catholic faith was very important to him. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church for 59 years where he served on the finance board, was a daily mass server, volunteered for funeral masses, and was Co-Chair of Sacred Heart Festivals; he also served as past president for the Holy Name Society.

Tom was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, he cherished his family. He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed Notre Dame, Green Bay Packers and the St. Louis Cardinals.

He is survived by his wife Connie; three children, Michael (Laure) McDonough, Diane (Steve) Maas, and Joseph (Nancy) McDonough. His grandchildren, Kaitlyn (Ryan) Berning, Kristen (Adam) Shaffer, Ryan (fiancé Caitie Parten) Maas, Molly (Garrett) Campbell, Emily McDonough, Mitchell McDonough, and Kelly McDonough. His great grandchildren Braeden, Adelaide, Vincent, and Theodore Berning; two brothers Lou McDonough and Bill McDonough and two sisters Mary Grant and Virgine (Dick) Johnson; sister-in-law Jan McDonough.

He was preceded in death by two sons in infancy; his parents; brothers Francis McDonough and Jack (Frances) McDonough; sisters-in-law Gerry McDonough and Rita McDonough; and brother-in-law, Loras Grant.

In lieu of flowers a Thomas McDonough memorial fund will be established.

The family wishes to thank the dedicated care of Medical Associates, Mercy Medical Center, Dr. Ringold and his staff at Grand River Medical Group and the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics that so lovingly cared for Tom on his last journey. A very special thank you for all the prayer groups and especially the BVM Sisters who Tom enjoyed spending time with.
