1924-2015

DES MOINES

A Scout of a bygone day.

Born on January 7, 1924, Gustav Ulrich Silzer Jr passed away Monday, November 23 ,2015; in Des Moines, IA at the age of 91.

He served in WWII with The 3rd Army, 80th Infantry Division in France, The Ardennes, and at The Battle of the Bulge. Gus received The Purple Heart in service to his country. He started his career as a teacher and coach at McCallsburg, IA, and continued his career with a MASTER of PSYCHOLOGY from The University of Iowa, and was a lead psychologist for AEA 11 and the State of Iowa. An avid fisherman and outdoorsman, he founded BSA Troop 93 and served as Scout Master.

Family includes 3 sons, Greg (Carol), Jeff (Carla), Doug (Tracy), grandchildren Michelle, Amanda, Matt, Erin, Grant: and great grandchildren Annabelle and Emma; his sister, Helen Spitler (Jack) and several nieces and nephews.

He kindled a blaze with a flint spark,
And then -- as the flames leaped high,
Like a spirit thing, he had taken wing;
He waved, and he called "good-bye".--
