Obit: Michael J. Burke (M.J. Burke)

"M.J. Burke died 05 April, 1900, of old age.
He was born in Clare Co,Ireland in 1810 and graduated from the Trinity College in Dublin.
He decended from parents who's ancestors, on both sides, were remarkable for their learning.

He was a civil-engineer-surveyor-school master-and later a farmer. In 1846/47 in Ireland, during the famine, he officiated in government relief to the starving. He came to America in 1849 and settled in Dubuque, Iowa where he lived for 9 years. He surveyed public land for the government, in Iowa and Minnesota.

In 1852, he married Katherine Martin. They moved to Johnson County in 1858, three miles east of Lenexa. He first surveyed here for the Indians and afterwards surveyed Johnson County.
