The band director at Kennedy high school suffered an apparent heart attack Monday afternoon while he was driving his vehicle on Wenig road near Brookland drive NE, police said. Francis W. Kluesner, 59, of 2729 Dalewood avenue SE, was pronounced dead on arrival at Mercy hospital.

Authorities reported Kluesner was southbound on Wenig road at 3:50 p.m. when he suffered the heart attack. The vehicle crossed the street, jumped a curb and struck a tree. It rolled backward and struck another tree.

Born Sept. 26, 1917, in Holy Cross, he had been a resident of Cedar Rapids for the last 19 years. He had taught band in school at Wyoming and at Prairie high school. He was a member of All Saints church, NEIBA, NESA, CREA, ISEA, Musicians Union Local No. 137, Cedar Rapids Symphony, solo clarinetist for the Cedar Rapids municipal band, and chairman and guest conductor of the municipal band. He had also been guest conductor of the Band Festivals in Eastern Iowa and was name bandmaster of the year in 1967.

Mr. Kluesner is survived by his wife, the former Imelda Connolly; two sons, James F. of Weisbaden, West Germany, and Dean J. of Los Angeles; one daughter, Susan of Denver, Colo.; and one sister, Mrs. Thomas O’Brien of New London.

Services: Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at All Saints church concelebrated by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Edmund J. Becker and the Revs. Lloyd Connolly and Phillip McDermott. Burial in Dyersville. Friends may call at the Stewart funeral home Wednesday from 1 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Msgr. Beker will recite the Rosary Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
