FORMER POLICE OFFICER IS DEAD

James F. Ryan Passes Away
at Home on West Third Street

James F. Ryan, ex-policeman, passed away at his home, 185 West Third street, Friday morning at 11:30 o’clock. A year ago Mr. Ryan’s health began to fail and his condition failed in spite of every care. The deceased was born in Jackson county, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Ryan, pioneers of that county. He came to Dubuque thirty-six years ago and worked as a grocery clerk. Later he formed a partnership in a grocery store with his uncle, Mr. Ed Reddin. After retiring from the grocery business he became a member of the police department in which he gave several years of faithful service. Later he became desk sergeant, from which position he retired because of ill health.

He was united in marriage to Miss Jane Reilly at St. Theresa’s church in 1888 and she survives him with one son, James, of Washington, D. C., and a daughter, Miss Grace. Four brothers, John, Eureka, Mont.; Maurice, Denver, Colo.; William, Monti, Ia.; Michael, Dubuque; and three sisters, Mrs. Thomas Moore, Monti; Mrs. John O’Connell, Cascade, and Mrs. Elizabeth Mahoney, city, also survive his death.

Mr. Ryan was a devoted husband and father, and a faithful adherent of the Catholic church. In his public as well as private life he merited the highest esteem and confidence. He was a member of the A. O. U. W., the Moose and the Holy Name Society of the Cathedral. The funeral will be held Monday from the family residence to the Cathedral at 9 o’clock. The interment will be made in Mt. Olivet.

Compliments of Joseph Cahill
