BENNETT’S REPORT

CORONER INQUIRED INTO THE
DEATH OF THIRTY-FIVE PERSONS

Of These Only Four Were Suicides
-Cause of the Death of
Others
~
Coroner Bennett was called upon during the year just closed to inquire into the cause of death of thirty-five persons, who came to their end under peculiar or unnatural circumstances. Of the thirty-five, only four committed suicide, three by hanging, and one by shooting.

The following shows the date of inquests conducted by him in 1901, the name of the deceased and the cause of death:
April 4 - Carl W. Neuman, committed suicide by shooting himself with a revolver.
April 9 - Mrs. Mary Zoller, committed suicide by hanging
May 26 – Mrs. Henrietta Goetzinger, burned to death at Lore
June 4 – James Maxwell, struck by Illinois Central train at Vought’s crossing while crossing in a buggy.
June 11 – Joseph Hense, killed at Chicago Great Western fair grounds
June 12 – Mrs. N. Kolle, drowned at Eagle Point June 9th, with Mr. and Mrs. Julius Gunderian.
June 12 – Viewed body of Mr. Esersole
June 17 - ? Valiquit, droned at harbor.
June 20 – Leo Castinet, chocked to death while operating corn plow on F. Smith’s farm in Prairie Creek Township.
June 24 - Mrs. Maud Higgins, dropped dead at Washington Mill.
July 4 – Anton Bitters, drowned in river
July 5 – Ed Eberhardt, killed by Chicago Great Western train at Twin Springs
July 9 – Gotfried Albrecht, found dead in chair in home in Sherrill’s Mound
July 25 – Wm. Paul, found dead at Fuller’s house
July 25 – Rupert Gartner, found floating in river at rock cut.
July 29 – Joseph Smith, found dead in outhouse at Mr. Neumeister’s.
August 2- John A. Ruston, drowned at Green’s Island
August 7 – R. Tregellius, drowned at bridge
August 15 – Viewed body of Erl Bishop
September 6 – Mary, little daughter of Henry Germain, Washington Township, accidentally drowned in water tank, no inquest.-
September 7 – Phil Sherman, committed suicide by hanging
September 16 – Emil Voelker, crushed between two Milwaukee freight cars.
September 20 – Vitus Fleischman, drowned in Seventh Street slough
September 30 – Aug. Kusche, fell from porch in rear of 938 White Street
October 5 – H. Knoernschild, fell dead on Kaufmann Avenue, near North Main Street.
October 5 – J. B. Mills, dropped dead at corner of W. Fourteenth Street near Prairie
October 13 – Walter Rawlins, shot at Pike’s Peak diggings
October 17 – Frank Roehl, fell of Chicago Great Western engine at Durango
November 11 – Conrad Kofer, found dead in Phil Foell’s barn near Sherrill’s Mound
December 2 – Adolph Trilk, fell of scaffold at Fifth Avenue
December 4 – Mrs. Mary Krayer, struck by Chicago Great Western engine between Stafford St. and Eagle Point Ave. crossing
December 14 – James Pline, kicked by horse at Bankston
December 23 – James Brennan, struck by Illinois Central train near Dyersville
December 27 – Andrew Mertz, died suddenly in bed
December 27 – Andrew Schu-tzle, committed suicide by hanging (last name is blurred in article)
