Edward Eberhardt fell from the platform of the Great Western train Thursday afternoon near Twin Springs and his life was crushed out of him an instant later by the powerful wheels of the train.

Eberhardt was a young man well known in Dubuque. He formerly resided here, working as a painter in the employ of different railroad companies. A short time ago he removed to Independence, following his trade there. Wednesday he came to the city to spend the Fourth of July with his parents and visit with friends.

Thursday, in company with several of his friends, he went out to Twin Springs to spend the day. Excursion trains ran out there and after their arrival they run up the line to Graf to do some switching. Eberhardt boarded one of these trains and was riding on the platform on one of the coaches. He had just rolled a cigarette and was prepared to light it with a match which he had struck on the seat of his trousers. In doing this he stood on one leg. The movement of the train caused him to lose his balance and he fell head foremost between the cars. A groan and a shriek and then all was over. The wheels of the coach passed over his body crushed his life out immediately and leaving his body a horrible mangled mess.

The remains were removed to Bennett Bros. & Mulkern’s and coroner Bennett impaneled Bart Cain, Mike Liddy and Otto Gieger to act as a jury.

The death was a most deplorable one, as it took from the community a young man who was held in high esteem. Deceased his survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Eberhardt, three brothers, Joseph, Ralph and Leo, and six sisters, Mary, Teresa, Kate, Emma, Tillie and Bertha.
