John Heery

John Heery, one of the best known farmers of this section, died suddenly at his home in Washington township, Jones county, last Friday afternoon, February 13th, after a brief lllness but from a malady from which he had suffered for some time. His death was a great surprise to his many friends who were not aware of the seriousness of the state of health.

Mr. Heery was a son of James and Catherine Heery and was born in county Cavan, Ireland, June 24, 1840, and was therefore in his 74th year when death claimed him. He came to the United States with his father and family, in 1847, coming by the way of New Orleans —the mother having died at sea on the voyage to America. His father and family remained several years in St. Louis but in 1854 came to Iowa and entered government land in Washington township, Jones county, which was the homestead where John Heery lived practically all of the remainder of his life.

James Heery, the father died in 1891. His father and brother, Bernard Heery, went to California about 1860. The former returned after two or three years and resumed work upon the farm. Bernard remained in the coast state where he died.

John Heery was married to Miss Mary Hogan, of Castle Grove, Jones county, Iowa, February 3, 1897, and one daughter, Miss Marcella, was born to them. Besides his wife and daughter, Mr. Heery is survived by his brother William Heery, of East Cascade, and sister, Sister M. Averildis B. V. M., Lyons, Iowa.

Mr. Heery was a man of most respectable character and a most worthy citizen in every estimate of the appellation. His charity was broad and sincere. He was determined in what be believed to be right, but his firmness was tempered with justice. He lived by the golden rule and in his bestowals in the sources of need in the cause of charity his principle was that the left hand should know not the gifts of the right. He lived and died with the good opinion of mankind, and as a Christian gentleman, and no more can be said of any man.

The funeral of Mr. Heery took place Monday forenoon Feb. 16th from the residence to St. Martin’s church, where Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Rev. L. Roche. The pallbearers were: James Murphy, J. F. Lehner, John Lowham, Jas. Lowham, Jobn Davis, Joseph Davis. J. C. Devlin, John Brown.
