Bernhardt Baumhover, one of the pioneer resident of this city, passed away yesterday at noon at the family residence, 1603 Jackson Street. Mr. Baumhover had been ill several months. Having suffered an attack of pneumonia in the early part of January, he hovered between life and death for many weeks. His condition, however, continued to improve a week ago and his family was hopeful for his recovery. Death came somewhat suddenly and as the members of his family gathered about his bedside the patient sufferer passed peacefully away, fortified and consoled by the last rites of the Catholic Church, which he had been lifelong member. Deceased was born in Ostenfeldt, Germany Oct. 28, 1835, emigrating to this country with his parents in the year 1854. The family located in this city and have since that time resided here. Mr. Baumhover was united in marriage with Miss Evaline Bach in 1872, who with four daughters survive him. They are Mrs. J. C. Fuchs, Julia, Emiline and Maude. Two brothers, Anton of this city and Henry of Carroll, Iowa, and two sisters, Mrs. L. Schmitz and Mrs. K. Kessler, both of Dubuque, also survive him.
Mr. Baumhover was a charter member of the Dubuque Cabinet Makers’ Association, continuing his interest with the firm up to the time of his death. Honorable in his business career, he was held in high regard by his associates. In his home he was beloved by his family and friends and his death is in truth a sad blow to the community.
