Michael F. “Mike” Sabers, 52, of Dubuque, passed away Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at home, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 9, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Rev. Dwayne Thoman will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday, December 8, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Hoffmann-Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Mike was born June 17, 1959 in Dubuque, the son of Floyd and Cecelia (Ruden) Sabers. He graduated from Wahlert High School in 1977, and went on to graduate from NICC. He married Julie Manderscheid on June 23, 1990 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, LaMotte.

He was employed at the Battery Center for many years.

Mike was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed watching the Bears, the White Sox, the Bulls, and especially the Hawkeyes. He liked fishing and deer hunting. Mike also liked teasing his nieces and nephews, who called him “Uncle Buck”.

Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Julie of Dubuque; his sisters, Sandy Helbing, Bonnie Breen, and Nita (Roger) Kremer, all of Dubuque; his brothers, Bill (Judy) Sabers, Steve (Leann) Sabers, and Rick Sabers, all of Dubuque; his parents-in-law, Robert and Carol Manderscheid of LaMotte; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-laws, Wayne and Rebecca Manderscheid of Fort Worth, TX, Kevin and Stephanie Manderscheid of Maple Valley, WA, and Paul and Michelle Benschoter of Des Moines; his grandmother-in-laws, Margaret Buelow and Florence Manderscheid; his godsons, Scott and Zachary Sabers, both of Dubuque; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by twin sisters in infancy, Judith and Janet; his brother in law, Harold Helbing; his grandfather in laws, Don Toll and Francis Manderscheid; and his stepgrandfather in law, Bob Buelow.
Memorials may be made to the Mike Sabers Memorial Fund.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice of Dubuque, especially Amy C. and Amy E.; Dr. Stille of Dubuque; and Dr. Wehbe of University of Iowa Hospital.
