Monsignor Justin A. Kress, 85, of Villa Raphael, died at 7:45 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at Mercy Health Center St. Joseph Unit. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick’s Church. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa where there will be a flag presentation by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church, where there will be a wake service at 7 p.m. Friends may also call after 9 a.m. Friday at the church. The Behr Funeral Home, 1419 Main St., is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Oct. 28, 1913 in Dubuque, son of Charles A. and Loretta (Brummer) Kress. He attended parochial schools in Dubuque and graduated from the former Loras (Columbia) Academy and college in 1935. He studied theology at Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Cinnanncti, Norwood, Ohio from 1935-39.

He was ordained into the priesthood at St. Raphael’s Cathedral in Dubuque by Archbishop Francis J. Beckman on June 3, 1939.

Monsignor Kress served as assistant pastor for St. Mary’s, Waverly, Iowa, and Holy Name, Shellrock, Iowa, from 1939-1943. His other assignments included chaplain in the Navy from 1943-46; assistant pastor of St. Patrick’s Church, Dubuque, 1946-47; chaplain at Immaculate Conception Academy, Dubuque, 1947-48; pastor at Sacred Heart, Grundy Center, Iowa, and St. Mary’s, Dike, Iowa, 1948-55; pastor at St. Mary’s, Ackley, Iowa, 1955-1965; pastor at Sacred Heart, Manly, Iowa, 1965-68; pastor at St. Patrick’s, Tama, Iowa, 1968-1970; pastor, of St. Mary’s, Manchester, Iowa, 1970-76; pastor at St. Mary’s, Lamont, Iowa, 1976-78; pastor at St. Patrick’s, North Garryowen, Iowa, rural Bernard, Iowa, 1978-1986; at residence and assisting at St. Patrick’s, Dubuque, 1986-1991; and in residence at Villa Raphael, Dubuque, 1991-1999.

He was named prelate of Honor on July 17, 1987. He served on the Archdiocesan Priest’s Council and Archdiocesan Priest’s Personal Board. He was member of Knights of Columbus Council 510, of Dubuque, and the American Legion Post 6, of Dubuque, where he served as post chaplain.

Surviving are two sister, Ethel M. Forman, of Epworth, Iowa, and Sister Justina Kress, OP, of Dominic Villa; Dubuque, a niece and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Clifford Kress.
