LUXEMBURG, Iowa - Eugene "Gene" Goebel, 90, of Luxemburg, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 2004, at Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque, following a brief illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Luxemburg, with the Rev. Dennis Miller officiating. Burial will be in St. Boniface Cemetery, New Vienna.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 3 p.m.

He was born on Jan. 20, 1914, in Luxemburg, son of Ernest H. and Catherine (Steffen) Goebel.

Gene was a cowboy in Texas for three years before he married, where he learned this prayer: "Thank the Lord for the sun, the moon, the stars and the earth we live on, for the women that give us children and the elders that teach them."

He married Helen Klaus on Aug. 25, 1936, in New Vienna. They farmed together in the Luxemburg area all of their lives. She preceded him in death on May 13, 2001.

He loved working on equipment and enjoyed hunting and fishing. As a young man, he was a Golden Glove Boxer.

He was a 55-year member of the Farm Bureau.
Surviving are four sons, Jack, of Colesburg, Ernie George (Georgia), of Dubuque, Joseph (Mary), of Guttenberg, and Robert, of Fairfax; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Othilda Scherman and Virginette (Loras) Hosch, both of Dubuque, Helen Hatch, of Lancaster, Wis., and Louise (Arthur) Ries, of New Vienna.

He also was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond, Leander and Larry Goebel; and two sisters, Irene Block and Martha Lechtenberg.
