Dubuque Herald – October 1, 1865

ANOTHER PRISONER OVERBOARD – A horse thief who had been operating in Floyd County, and who gave his name as E. P. McCullough was caught in Minnesota recently, and on Wednesday, 20th inst. returned, and the District Court having been in session was immediately placed on trial and which resulted in his conviction and sentenced to penitentiary. On Monday last he passed through the city en route for Fort Madison, S. O. Page having him in charge. While on the boat going down the river he suddenly broke away from his keeper, seized a life preserver, and sprang to the railing to jump overboard. Mr. Page succeeded in reaching him in time to snatch the life-preserver from him, but not so as to prevent him from jumping in the river. Being heavily laden with shackles he immediately sunk to the bottom to be seen never more. This occurred within two-hundred yards of the place where the Lansing prisoner jumped overboard not long since and was drowned.
