Lela M. Henry, 83, of Luther Manor, formerly of 2350 Evergreen, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Luther Manor.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Grandview Avenue United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Center Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., and after 9 a.m. Monday at the church.

She was born on March 20, 1918, in Golden City, Mo., daughter of William and Marguerite (Stump) Sloan. In 1938, she married Herschel T. Henry in Oskaloosa, Iowa. They moved to Dubuque in 1942, and together owned and operated Power Lawn and Garden Equipment.

She was born in Golden City, Mo., and spent her childhood years living on several farms in southern Iowa. She graduated from high school in Albia, Iowa, and, as a young woman, she was a teacher in a country school.

She was a very active member of Grandview Avenue United Methodist Church and also did volunteer work for many years with the Dubuque Community Schools at Hoover, Bryant and Kennedy elementary schools. She also was active in Elder hostel and a member of the Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens.

She was curious by nature and a life-long student. She was an avid reader, gardener, birder and quilter. She dreamed of tall-grass prairies and the woods, fields and streams of her childhood.

She found strength and comfort in God and in the generations of women who came before her.

Surviving are four sons, Allen (Sandra) Henry, of Melbourne, Fla., Charles (Susan) Henry, of Tipton, Mo., Douglas (Martha Fuerste) Henry, of Dubuque, and James (Wendy) Henry, of Storm Lake, Iowa; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister, Marilyn (Harley) Beebe, of Loves Park, Ill., and a brother-in-law, David Brabbs.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herschel; a son, Warren Henry; a sister, Sylvia Brabbs; and a brother, Stanley Sloan, who died in childhood.

Memorials may be given to Grandview Avenue United Methodist Church and the Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens.
