Dennis Sullivan was born in County Cork Ireland in 1802. It is recorded in the Sullivan family bible that Denis is a descendant of the O'Sullivan- The Beare clan which defended the Dunboy Castle in the 1600s. Dennis Sullivan married Ellen Crowley in 1825 in Bandon, Ireland. Denis' wife Ellen died in about 1840 and he married Mary Driscoll in about 1843. Denis had moved to the USA in 1835 and settled in Philadelphia, PA. Besides raising his own family, he also raised part of his brother Richard Sullivans family. Richard and his wife (Anna) Hanora Sullivan both died in Ireland in 1847. Richard and Hanora had 8 children. Three of their children were raised by Dennis who brought his niece and nephews to America, where they were raised as his own. In 1847 he brought his brothers children to live here with him. They were Patrick, Mary, and Timothy Sullivan. Baptismal record indicate that all children were baptized at St. Patrick's Church in Bandon, County Cork, Ireland. Denis was a painter and printer. In 1853 Dennis and his family moved to Dubuque County, Iowa.

She met Jeremiah Sullivan (no relation) in Woodbury Co. and they were married. Anna had 2 children Joseph
and Mary. Mary died at age 4 months. Anna died Nov 2, 1882. Jeremiah left Woodbury Co. in 1884 and never returned.
Joseph was raised by an Uncle, Michael Sullivan from Woodbury Co.
