Dubuque Democratic Herald – Nov. 6, 1864

Locomotive Explosion – The Illinois Central Railroad Co. are losing about an engine a month by the bursting of boilers. Engine 51 exploded last Friday at Penn, instantly killing T. Sullivan, the engineer, and injuring the fireman, Amos Beal, in such a manner that he lived but three hours afterwards. The engine was hauling a freight train at the time, and had been employed as yard engine at Dunleith. The cause of the disaster is unknown, but it is supposed to have been from a worn out boiler.
